Location

Annulliamo la Distanza Onlus

Who Benefits from the Project
Children and teenagers in difficult family/social situations

Duration
Ten years

Context
Since 1998, Annulliamo la Distanza has maintained a school of excellent scholastic instruction in Asmara in which children from difficult family and social situations (who otherwise would have received no or partial education) are actively engaged.

Plan of Action
There are presently 47 members of our school, ranging from very young children to sage adolescents, who come every Monday – Saturday to participate in our educational instruction program, which is comprehensive of traditional Eritrean and European material.  We aim to better this program through the addition of:

    1. Classes in English and Mathematics, taught by one of our correspondents in Asmara – a certified teacher who graduated with a specialization in Zoology and Economics and who has experience coordinating general school activities.
    2. Classes in Italian taught by qualified Italian teachers who presently specialize in teaching Italian to foreigners; these same teachers will also be used to assist with the education of cognition-motor issues.
    3. Classes in English by a qualified mother tongue teacher.
    4. Classes in informatics.

Every teacher is supported by former students of the school who help in translating and facilitating conversations between the teachers and\ the children.  In order to succeed in teaching these courses well, we use the necessary materials (e.g., textbooks) in both Italian and English, fables, fairy tales, simple stories, and simple scholastic material. They are useful in helping the students to associate images with words and exercises.  Wherein books are in short supply, we will need the use of a photocopier.  During our daily pause, we further aim to provide children with a nutritious snack.  Further donations of children’s clothing and/or toys in good condition will be beneficial.
Recently we have set-up a couple of soccer teams composed by young Eritrean.

Objective
The objective of the school in Asmara is to aid in the scholastic formation of our students, teaching them the values of civility, friendship, and solidarity, above all.

Supervising & Monitoring the Project
Annulliamo la Distanza constantly maintains relationships with its Eritrean and Italian teachers, students, and collaborators in Asmara, contacting them weekly to receive progress updates, to assist with any problems that might have arisen, and to ensure that the teaching materials are sufficient, among other things.  Our volunteers also occasionally travel to Asmara, where they personally monitor the situation and effectiveness of Project “School.”  Twice monthly, our Eritrean correspondents are responsible for sending course plans and progress to our office in Italy for review.
