Background
The area of Adi Guubò, like many in Eritrea, has an adult population composed of mostly women and the elderly. This situation has arisen partially due to the independence war from nearby Ethiopia, which ended in 1991; but mostly because of the new border war, begun in 1998 and not yet resolved, that forces all the young manpower to the front. This situation constrains most mothers to work and to be out of the house for the entire day, which makes it impossible for them to look after the children, who are often left to themselves. The population of the village has rallied to resolve this situation, proposing to build a kindergarten for the preschoolers with the aid of volunteers, and by taking advantage of the collaboration with the Ministry of Education, which will provide for the necessary staff to educate the children; the kindergarten teachers, will in fact be paid by the Ministry.
This project has a great social relevance, because it is directed towards a people who have demonstrated a broad sensibility to increase their own social status by avoiding a mere dependence on external assistance funds.
General Objectives
The overall objective is to educate and to accustom the children of preschool age to studying, to learning and to a culture of peace and non – violence, in an area particularly affected by illiteracy and malnutrition.
The establishment of a permanent kindergarten would allow these children to be taken care of and to be stimulated, in a way to set the conditions for more interest towards learning and to give them the ability to build better lives for themselves in the future.
